Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Located only 7 mi from our premises, the Durango & Silverton Railroad is the most famous attraction in Durango.

Durango CO was founded in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway. Shortly thereafter, in the summer of 1881, the railroad reached the city and the line was built to Silverton in the fall of the same year. In July 1882, the tracks to Silverton were completed and the railroad began freight and passenger service.

Originally built to transport gold and silver ore, passengers quickly realized that the spectacular views were the real value of the line.
This historic train has been in continuous operation between Durango and Silverton since 1882, going all the way up only from May to October, but offering several winter tours as well.

What is there to see in Silverton, the quick tour

Silverton, located at an elevation of 9,318 ft, is a historic mining town established in 1874. Today Silverton has a population of about 600 and is the only town in San Juan County. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1961 and attracts tourists from all over the world.

When you arrive on the railroad, there is unfortunately not much time for sightseeing before the train’s steam whistle calls you back, but we have a few suggestions.

Start on Empire St, where you could see the Old Townsquare and and the Old Silverton Jail, then stroll along Greene St and enjoy the flair of one of the most beautiful old western towns in Colorado, surrounded by the majestic San Juan Mountains. If you are looking for culture and history, the San Juan County Historical Society Mining Heritage Center (aka the Museum), located on Greene St as well, offers a nice overview of the city’s history. And if you are craving something sweet or a hot or cold drink, we highly recommend the Coffee Bear, our favorite place in town. ❤️

We’re sure you haven’t seen enough after this visit and want to come back? You can find more tips for more time to spend here.
